A calm lake is about as forgiving as the outdoors gets. A few simple habits keep it that way.
None of this needs to make the day feel serious. Most lake safety is just a handful of easy habits.
Wear a life jacket on the water

A life jacket that fits is the one thing worth checking every time. On any boat, kayak, or paddleboard, wear it, and put kids in one near the water too.
The U.S. Coast Guard recommends a properly fitted life jacket for every paddler, and calm water doesn’t change that.
Watch the wind, not just the sun
Wind is what turns a flat lake choppy. If whitecaps appear or the breeze picks up, head in. Wind builds faster than most people expect.
Stay near shore at first
On an early outing, keep close to the shoreline. It’s a shorter swim or paddle back if anything goes wrong, and it’s easier to judge distance.
That’s the same advice for a first kayak or paddleboard outing.
Tell someone, and don’t go alone
Let someone know where you’ll be and when you’ll be back. A swim or paddle is safer and more fun with another person along.
For the water itself, lake swimming covers what’s different from a pool.
Life jacket, an eye on the wind, close to shore, and a buddy. That’s most of it. For the bigger picture, planning an easy lake day keeps things simple.
